Description

Just below the sunlit surface, a female humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) performs a slow backroll – an unusual, gentle display of play and possible courtship. For nearly two hours, she stayed directly in front of us, showing clear curiosity toward humans. Such prolonged interaction is rare and highlights the complexity of humpback behavior during breeding season. Captured near Rurutu, French Polynesia in 2025.
